The courts were officially opened on Sunday 17th October 2010 by Judy Murray, who also ran a coaching session for 50 local young people.
The project was funded through the fundraising efforts of the local community. Irvine Bay pledged £50,000 to help meet the cost, provided the community could raise the remaining £30,000-plus required. The additional funding was secured from SportScotland, following a successful bid for support.
The project is designed to promote healthy living and help to revitalise the community.
Over summer 2009 the cause was helped by leading tennis coach Judy Murray – mother of world tennis number 3 Andy Murray – who gave her backing to promote the need to resurface community tennis courts in the town.
I wanted to help because I believe everyone has the right to play sport and because these tennis courts are in such a bad way, the local community is missing out. Judy Murray
The outstanding new facilities are now open free of charge for everyone in the community to promote healthy living and increase tennis participation among local youngsters.
The quality of life in the Irving Bay area continues to improve as new regeneration projects make the area an attract place to live.
