Bridgegate streetscape gains national recognition
The £2.2 million transformation of the streetscape in the centre of Irvine has been shortlisted for two prestigious awards.
The work at Bridgegate has been shortlisted in the Royal Town Planning Institute Award for Excellence in planning and design for the public realm – open to projects from throughout the UK. The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony in London in June.
The work has also been shortlisted in the Scottish Design Awards in the Architecture; Public Realm and Landscaping category, with the winners again due to be announced in June.
Irvine Bay Regeneration Company led the project, part of a much wider programme of works in Irvine town centre being carried out in partnership with North Ayrshire Council and others.
Patrick Wiggins, Chief Executive or Irvine Bay Regeneration Company, said: “This recognition of the high quality of the work from two prestigious awards is very gratifying. As well as the professional team, hundreds of local people were involved in helping to shape some of the key elements of the work. I hope everyone is proud of the finished product, and of these positive endorsements.”
The refurbishment of the Bridgegate has included hard and soft landscaping, signage, lighting, street furniture and wider urban design/landscape features. Major public art was commissioned from artist Peter McCaughey, such as The Trinity Mirror – a 9 metre high sculpture which is the central focus in the public art programme.
Irvine Bay also led on the refurbishment of Trinity Church, the A-listed landmark building in the town centre.
