Stevenston Community Art

Following the successful creation of a new piece of art for the centre of Stevenston, the project was extended with a series of workshops involving young people across North Ayrshire.

At Stevenston Cross

Pupils from Auchenharvie Academy and Ardeer, St John's and Glencairn Primaries took part in a project which created a new piece of public art for Stevenston.

Tiled mosaic has been used on large boulders in the central garden area at Stevenston Cross to create artworks which symbolise the business future of Stevenston, and also the industrial legacy of the towns’ heritage.

Pupils from the schools took part in the launch for the new artwork which look place in September 2012.

The new Grange Business Centre in Stevenston has created an opportunity to engage with local young people on the future of their town. The new artwork builds on this, and is the expression of the creativity of local young people.

Any Wall Anywhere

Working in partnership with North Ayrshire Council’s Caley Youth Centre we held a series of workshops where participants had the opportunity to express their ideas on the theme of sky, sea and sand.

Led by a team of youth leaders from the Caley Centre the participants were provided with art materials and their own canvas. They were shown different techniques and could also create digital images using iPads.

In all there were 21 sessions with community groups groups and projects working with young people living in the North Ayrshire area aged 12 – 25 years. Around 170 young people took part. We also held 2 open sessions for all ages at the WAVE studio in Rivergate where almost 200 people took part.

Canvases are being sent across the world to countries including Singapore, South Korea, France and the Emirates with the aim of connecting Irvine Bay images with international locations.

A road trip along the coast of Irvine Bay will use projection technology to make temporary displays of the art work on walls and buildings. This road trip will be recorded and added to the gallery.

Curriculum for Excellence

The project provided an ideal opportunity for pupils to develop their art and design skills.
